Entering into the Final Week

I sort of kicked off this week with a lot of sweat. I know 79 with 60% humidity doesn't sound that bad, but I'm sitting here with sweat running into my eyes and down my cheek, with my shirt (rather, Emily's shirt hehe) stuck to my body. I'm trying to make up for this past semester's sloth by running everyday. It's not quite been every day, but I'm making an effort. (Yay Sonic happy hour.)
Last week we did a lot of sorting and organizing to both pack and get ready for the garage sale Saturday morning. I'm glad I was given that little window into Josh and Emily's childhood... Emily's became the pink and purple dolls and doll house side of the garage, and Josh's was the scattered g.i.joes and leggos.
Since we did our packing trial run on Sunday, this week isn't so busy. Well, there is a little more packing to be done (Josh's room looks like a sweatshop explosion combined with a luggage store clearance), but at least we know it fits. Also, we were given an added blessing when someone (Twigs, I think) suggested we look for a snowboard rack on Craig's list so that we wouldn't have to deal with packing ours. I wondered what the chances of finding one here in South Carolina would be, but lo and behold Josh found one in Irmo in perfect condition for only $50! Fantastic! Now Boaz is all ready for his big trip West with his new tires, rack and USC sticker.
We're getting ready, too... after this week's excitement of Emily's graduation and senior recitals and that sort of thing (and a visit from the relatives and a wedding in Beaufort), we'll be ready to do the final packing, mapquesting, and get on our way!

It Just Sneaks Up

Well, last week I finished Spring semester. It was a lovely thought - no more school for a good, long while.
But then last week I registered for a Senior Capstone for the summer (my first official summer class ever), and today I registered for Fall Quarter. I'm really not even sure if I registered for the right things - I'm not getting advised until we get back to Portland. I went off what I remembered I needed, and just registered for extra stuff, just in case.
Right now, the line up is:
Summer: Medieval Portland
Fall: Modern Middle East II, American Women Writers, Modern Brit Lit, Intro to French lit, and Ancient Near East (which apparently Josh took in his Fall Quarter at PSU).
I kind of hope I can keep those classes, now... they sound interesting. Hopefully I'm not too out of practice with English classes.

A New Blessing

SING SING SING
[by Chris Tomlin]

We will sing, sing, sing
And make music with the heavens
We will sing, sing, sing
Grateful that You hear us
When we shout your praise
Lift high the name of Jesus

What's not to love about You?
Heaven and earth adore You
Kings and kingdoms bow down
Son of God, You are the One
You are the One we're living for

You are the love that frees us
You are the light that leads us
Like a fire burning
Son of God, You are the one
You are the one we're living for

Change Crazy!

This morning on tv they were talking about dealing with change. Some woman who wrote a book or something was saying to remember to "seed": Sleep. Eat healthy. Exercise. Drink (water). I think I can handle that.
Yesterday Josh came over and helped me move out of my apartment. Mallory moved out on Friday, and the other three of us moved out yesterday midday. Moving out is a change, and we're all in for a lot more changes to come. As for doing well with change, that "seed" idea is probably a good thing. But, as the weather is getting hot here, I already have to do most of that to survive the heat. The sleep thing is a little challenging, though.
Between studying and packing, which might have kept me busy enough to not get enough sleep, this week I watched my first Bollywood movies with my roommate Ekshita. Two nights in a row we watched them - and, as E warned me half an hour into the first one, Indian movies are longer than American movies. That is quite true. Three hours later we were wrapping up the movie. But it didn't ever feel like 3 and 1/2 hours - the plots were so involved, and between the incredible characters, songs, and absolutely fantastic dancing, there is no going to sleep at a reasonable hour. The first film we watched was called Rang De Basanti. I won't bother talking about it because I can't do it justice. Then we watched Kal Ho Naa Ho, which I also loved. Now I feel like I'm addicted and it's too late! E is off to NYC and then back to India (as we speak), and then back to SC, where I will not be. I'll have to see where in Portland I can find some Bollywood. But I won't have E to tell me when they are actually speaking Punjabi not Hindi, or when the subtitles for the songs are off, and what is going on with the Hindu traditions - and which building her dad works in, etc. But it will remind me of her, and it will be fun.
As will these next 3 weeks of living with the Schrecks and trying to organize and pack all of our stuff.

Our First Shower

Finally, I am posting pictures from our lovely shower here in Lexington, South Carolina, graciously hosted by Mrs Schreck, Mrs McAlister, and Mrs Burchill.

The cakes!
[raspberry filled, chocolate and rum cake]

Eating all the delicious food[Mallory (my roommate), Beau (her fiance), Sara (from Stronghold and USC). Good eating shot.][Sam and Collin (from FBCL), Sarah and Jesse (youth pastors at FBCL). Matt and Katie from church were there too, somewhere...][Mr and Mrs Byers (Liana's parents), and Mrs Ramos and her daughter (from Ben Lipen). Look at those strawberries!][Josh and his boys, Rustin and Rob]

Opening our gifts
[our bathroom accessories, from Sara][Twigs and Kandace (from FBCL). Rob's probably laughing at something in the photo slide show.][Beau, Sara, and Mallory watch us - something entertaining must have happened hehe]
[our duvet cover and shams from the Schrecks]
[I really didn't open all of them - see! We traded off. Opening presents is a little confusing for Josh?]

Everyone wrote nice little messages to us on the chalkboard

Besides good food and gifts, Mr Schreck gave a little devo and Mrs Burchill had a lot of super fun games for us. It was awesome! Haha. We're really going to miss everyone here. It was a fantastic and very encouraging evening.

At the MoMA online store they have a collection called "Destination Japan" right now. Needless to say, I love it. Especially this shirt. There are unending amounts of very cool things in the collection. Oh man.
How obvious is it that I am procrastinating?

Last Day of Classes

Today was Josh's last day of classes... ever! Congratulations to my smart boy.

It was my last day of classes at the University of South Carolina. It has been an experience. I must say, I have really enjoyed my classes here. The professors (most of them) have been fantastic. And I suppose I have learned a lot. I have learned a lot from my professors and books, but also about life from my classmates, coworkers, study buddies, and friends.

USC has been full of surprises - from little tiny ants that bit really hard, to decent acai smoothies, to rude cafeteria people, to strange college paraphernalia, to girls in sorority shirts who are actually smart (there were a few!), to geckos landing on your head, to nice roommates and Justin Timberlake at the Strom (so rumors say).

Tonight, as I sit in my dorm, thankful for cold mashed potatoes and stale wheat thins while writing a paper arguing that France is better off in 2000 than it was in 1900, I feel like a college student. I might be glad these days aren't quite over yet.

Art Lesson of the Day

Here's a little Quentin Massys for you, from 1513. The incredible thing is that he didn't even come up with this on his own - it's a copy of a Leonardo Da Vinci! Maybe he just thought it was funny, too. But, in the words of my friend John, who sits on my left, "I guess ... if you've got it... flaunt it."

Vanity.

In lieu of doing homework this afternoon I painted my nails. Well, I did do homework, but I took less than necessary breaks (more specifically, vanity breaks).

It was fun.

Mmm!

Columbia is beautiful in the Spring! I love it. It is like NW summer weather with the most luscious vegetation and blue skies.

Foreverandever etc

(David Crowder Band)

Love so incredible to know

It's never gonna go, never gonna go
Love too impossible and true
For anyone but You, for anyone but You

I think I'm on the brink of something large
Maybe like the breaking of the dawn
Maybe like a match being lit
Or the sinking of a ship, letting go gives a better grip

I'm finding everything I'll ever need
By giving up gaining everything
Falling for You for eternity
Right here at Your feet
Where I wanna be
I am Yours

Love so indelible to know
You're never gonna go, you're never gonna go
Love too unthinkable and true
For anyone but You, for anyone but You

Maybe like a match being lit
Or the sinking of a ship, letting go gives a better grip

I'm finding everything I'll ever need
By giving up gaining everything
Falling for You for eternity
Right here at Your feet
Where I wanna be

I am Yours

Forever and ever and ever and ever
Forever and ever and ever and ever
and ever and ever and ever and ever
Forever and ever and ever and ever
Forever and ever and ever and ever
Forever and ever and ever and ever
Forever and ever and ever and ever
and ever and ever and ever and ever
and ever

Walk the World (Charlie Hall)

God as we walk this world,
We want to be a sign
Our prayers flow into love,
Giving your life

Broken but singing
Our hearts keep shining

Let my life shine, come and let my heart shine
We’re going to walk the world and lift the bread and wine
Like the stars shine, come and let our hearts shine
In a dark world, we lift the bread and wine

And we were born for this
Born for this day and time
Our prayers flow into love
Giving our lives

Marvelous Light (Charlie Hall)

I once was fatherless,
a stranger with no hope;
Your kindness wakened me,
Awakened me, from my sleep

Your love it beckons deeply,
a call to come and die.
By grace now I will come
And take this life, take your life.

Sin has lost it's power,
death has lost it's sting.
From the grave you've risen
VICTORIOUSLY!

Into marvelous light I'm running,
Out of darkness, out of shame.
By the cross you are the truth,
You are the life, you are the way

My dead heart now is beating,
My deepest stains now clean.
Your breath fills up my lungs.
Now I'm free. now I'm free!

Lift my hands and spin around,
See the light that i have found.
Oh the marvelous light
Marvelous light

Lift my hands and spin
See the light within...

Let God Arise (Chris Tomlin)

Hear the holy roar of God resound

Watch the waters part before us now
Come and see what He has done for us
Tell the world of His great love

Our God is a God who saves
Our God is a God who saves

Let God arise
Let God arise
Our God reigns now and forever
He reigns now and forever

His enemies will run for sure
The church will stand, she will endure
He holds the keys of life, our Lord
Death has no sting, no final word

A Little Weekend Inventory

This weekend was Passion 08, in Atlanta, GA. Thanks for the refreshing weekend, Jesus! It was phenomenal. And thanks to my FBC friends to made me come and were so fun. (haha that rhymed a little)
I got back happy and very tired. Studying has been a little strange - I zone out a lot.

[Louis Giglio]

Tonight is my new escapist pleasure: Jon & Kate + 8. I only just started watching last Monday night, but I love it. Those kids are the cutest thing that ever happened. And I think they love Jesus! ..at least they have Bible verses taped up around their house (if you look closely).

Here We Are, Again

It's Tuesday, but it's a Monday-ish Tuesday. No, maybe it is a Tuesday, and Monday was just odd, so Tuesday feels inclined to take up where Monday left off.
But the weekend was lovely and relaxing - hanging out with Grandma and Grandpa, and then lazying around with Josh.
This week is going to be short. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. But I'll take it and not complain.

Sunday Afternoon

Josh and I spent the afternoon wandering along the Riverwalk: it was lovely. Okay, well, it was really Josh doing a photo shoot with some friends here (I, assisting) - but it was fun and lovely all the same.
And then we went to Sonic Happy Hour. It was my first time. I had strawberry limeaide and he had cranberry.

Check it out now

I've got a website, a real one. Right here. There is also a new photoblog (the old one really was just a temporary). It's sweet.
